PLANNING TECHNICIAN

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Reviews or assists in the review of development proposals and site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations;
    Evaluates or assists in the evaluation of re-zonings, comprehensive plan amendments, site plans, special use permits, variances and other proposals;
    Prepares zoning verification letters and narrative staff reports and recommendations of limited complexity;
    Researches and compiles information on a variety of planning issues from multiple sources;
    Prepares public notices or property owner verifications;
    Prepares maps, charts, tables of limited complexity;
    Develops and maintains automated tracking systems, hard copy files and records;
    Performs routine office tasks in designated program areas, including data entry, file management, copying and answering telephone;
    Attends evening public meetings, assisting other planning staff as appropriate;
    Performs other related duties as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

    Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning;
    Knowledge of a relevant specialization such as urban design, transportation, land use, flood management and comprehensive planning;
    Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection;
    Knowledge of effective writing techniques;
    Statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations;
    Knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Internet applications, and basic GIS;
    Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public;
    Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve vaguely defined practical problems;
    Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions;
    Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously;
    Ability to create graphic designs, development strategies, and render site plans via sketches and/or computer graphics highly desirable.

PHYSCIAL DEMANDS

    Must have ability to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, stand, hear, hands to finger dexterity, handle, feel or operate objects, read and write English.
    Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment; such as but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier and fax machines.
    Work is performed indoors within a quiet to moderately noisy environment.
    Must be able to lift, carry and or push articles weighing up to 20 lbs.

REQUIREMENTS

Must have:

    Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, architecture or related field.
    Two years of planning experience in the State of Florida.
